Do you Dream? Why and how having a dream practice supports you as an artist

Why dreaming? Because being an artist, you draw from all of your life experiences when
creating your next piece, and they all come together and integrate in your dreaming. It’s the
place from which all creativity and imagination sources, mingles, and is revealed. The more you
tune in, the more access you’re granting yourself to that boundless wealth of material, emotions
and ideas. Making your relationship with your dreaming intentional is a key habit and becomes
an art in itself.

Anything to which you put your attention flourishes and evolves, and if ignored or shut away,
will whither and scatter. This is a Universal principle that governs everything, and your dreaming
is no exception, luckily. Meaning, as you give it your attention, valuing and engaging those
ephemeral encounters and discoveries, it too (your relationship with your dreaming) will flourish
and evolve.

So, how do you do this?
Journaling – the best (but not only) method for improving your dream recall
If you don’t have good dream recall:
Do you remember your dreams? If not, keeping a journal is a great key for opening up that
channel. If you wake and nothing is there, write anyways. Example: “It’s 6am, I’m tired, gotta
get up, shower, eat and get ready for work. I don’t yet remember what I was dreaming, but I
will.” You get the idea? It’s the friction of the pen on the paper that builds the muscle
memory….. the neural synapses, and begins to lasso your dreams. Even writing something that
you know isn’t right but is in your thoughts at the moment will trigger the experiences to return a
little more each day. The mind seeks accuracy, so if you write something that’s not accurate,
your thoughts will instinctively seek out what did happen. Please be patient with yourself, as that
memory may arrive in the next instance or at any point during your day. If you’re disciplined or
inspired, keeping a small notepad and pen with you during the day is another great idea. You
can also use voice recording on your phone; just be sure you know where the microphone is so
as not to accidentally smother it while recording. I've lost some great brainstorms making this
mistake.

You can begin by taking on a simple set of steps that take very little time, and if done
consistently, will produce quick, remarkable results.
